Jasper in Deadland

Ryan Scott Oliver

At the end of 2011, the Pasadena Musical Theater program, which provides an incredible opportunity for teens between the ages of 12 and 16 to work with professional musical theater composers and artists brought Martin Carrillo in to provide the Sound Design services for their production of visiting artist Ryan Scott Oliver’s Jasper in Deadland, an impressive medley of mythological stories and structured around a retelling of Orpheus and Eurydice … where Orpheus is a kid on the high school swim team. Martin Carrillo’s sound system consisted of 16 channels of Shure UHF-R, and a DM1000 triggered by Qlab which provided sound effects and voice-over playback. Reinforcement for the 2000 seat Auditorium was accomplished by a 6 cabinet Meyer Sound M1D center array using Meyer’s MAPP prediction algorithms, managed and processed by a Meyer Galileo. 2 UPJ-1P’s performed a Side Fill function in the very wide room, and 2 UPM-1P’s made for a front fill line out front of the Orchestra section. The professional 5 piece Band consisted of Drums/Toys, Keyboard, Electric Bass, Cello, and Electric Guitar all served by a Hearback system feeding individual MM-4XP speakers per player. The show was recorded for broadcast with a Fireface 800, Apogee converters and True systems Microphone preamps. What follows is a mix of the song Stroke by Stroke where Jasper takes a leap of faith.
